CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

Cash: Diamond in the Rough

“You've got some damn nerve showing your face here,” I snarled furiously through clenched teeth. I grabbed her arm, pulling her into the office and closing the door. She looked so much like Meredith, I almost forgot how enraged I was.

I narrowed my eyes at her. “All those years ago, I figured you were dead. Now that I know you aren’t, I should just kill your ass myself,” I hissed.

“Now, don’t get beside yourself, Cashmere. You ain’t too old for me to whip your tail, now. Ya hear?” Aunt Judy warned. “It’s a long story, Cash—”

I folded my arms across my chest and shifted my body to the side. “I got lots of time, Judy.”

She shook her head and chuckled like I’d said something funny. “Look at you, if you ain’t your mama’s chile—”

“Don’t you dare speak about my mother after you abandoned her only child!”

Aunt Judy closed her eyes and shook her head from side to side. “I didn’t abandon you, Cashmere. I would never—”

I sucked my teeth, rolling my neck. I don’t know where the hell my “hood chick” attitude came from, but I sure as hell was gettin’ outta body.

“Have a seat,” she said.

“I’ll stand,” I insisted, with my lips pressed together.

“Damn it. I said sit!” Aunt Judy bellowed, scaring the shit out of me.

Aunt Judy pulled out a pack of cigarettes and tapped the box against her hand. I don’t allow smoking in my office, but I decided to let the shit slide today.

She lit up her cigarette and started pacing around my office in circles. She took another puff and twisted her lips to the side, exhaling smoke into the air. “Your mama was a stubborn woman, I tell ya,” she chuckled heartily. Then, she stopped in her tracks, giving me a side eye. “Yo’ yella ass damn sure got it honest.”

I sat in silence, my eyes facing the floor, rapidly bouncing my knees up and down.

“That shit wasn’t supposed to go down like that, Cash… I—”

“I was there, Judy,” I interrupted. I finally raised my eyes and saw my aunt had managed to find a seat behind my desk.

“No, baby you were at home. You were home in the—”

I shot up out of my seat. “No, I was there!” I demanded. “I saw Mama fall hard to the ground. I was tying my shoes when I heard the loud ‘bang.’” Tears fell from my eyes as I pictured that moment. “I lifted up my head and called out to her…”
